Best Practices.

To ensure optimal performance in humid conditions, it is recommended to apply a coating to the boards. This will enhance their durability and resilience against moisture, thereby maintaining their reliability in load-bearing applications.

When resizing the boards (cutting to different or smaller dimensions), it is essential to coat the newly exposed edges.

For components being fastened, such as beams, rafters, joists, and trusses, pre-drilling is essential. The diameter of the pre-drilled hole should be smaller than the screw diameter to ensure effective engagement of the screw threads.

During transportation and storage, it is important to protect the PSB® boards from direct exposure to water droplets and precipitation on their edges and surfaces. Ensure that adequate protective covers are provided to maintain their integrity.

For fastening, it is recommended to use screws, nails, or staples with a length at least 2.5 times the thickness of the board, but not less than 50-75 mm. Fastening should be carried out at intervals of 150-300 mm on intermediate supports (depending on roof pitch), 150 mm along board joints, and 100 mm along roof edges.

It is advised not to install decorative tiles or wallpaper directly on PSB® Supreme, nor should plaster work be applied to its surface.

FAQs.

The right wall cladding depends on whether the project is interior or exterior, decorative or functional, and the climate conditions it must endure. For interiors, designers prioritize aesthetics and air quality, while exteriors require weather resistance and durability. DesertBoard’s Palm Strand Board (PSB®) is versatile enough for both, offering zero-formaldehyde emissions for healthier interiors and moisture resistance for GCC climates. With finishes including laminates, veneers, and PU coatings, DesertBoard adapts easily to diverse applications while providing a sustainable alternative to MDF or plywood.

Wall cladding acts as a shield, protecting structures from rain, UV exposure, and temperature fluctuations. In hot and humid climates, traditional cladding materials like untreated wood often warp or deteriorate quickly. DesertBoard PSB® resists moisture and termites when properly coated, maintaining stability in harsh GCC conditions. This durability reduces long-term maintenance while safeguarding building exteriors. By combining weather protection with carbon-negative production, DesertBoard offers both resilience and environmental responsibility in wall cladding applications.

Durability varies by material—natural stone is strong but costly, while untreated timber is affordable but vulnerable. Engineered composites such as DesertBoard PSB® provide a balanced solution, delivering long-term strength, termite resistance, and climate resilience at competitive costs. Unlike MDF or chipboard, which degrade in humid conditions, DesertBoard maintains structural integrity across years of use. Its carbon-negative, zero-formaldehyde credentials make it one of the most durable and sustainable wall cladding materials available in the GCC today.

The lifespan of exterior cladding typically ranges from 15 to 50 years, depending on the material and maintenance. Natural wood requires frequent treatment to reach the upper end of this range, while engineered composites like DesertBoard PSB® can maintain performance far longer with minimal upkeep. DesertBoard’s termite resistance and dimensional stability in humid climates ensure that buildings remain visually appealing and structurally protected. By offering long-lasting durability, DesertBoard reduces lifecycle costs and waste while supporting sustainability goals.

Yes. Modern composite cladding materials replicate the look of natural timber or stone while offering better durability and sustainability. DesertBoard PSB® provides a smooth surface that can be veneered, laminated, or painted to achieve a variety of finishes. This design flexibility allows architects to create premium aesthetics without sacrificing performance. Unlike traditional timber, DesertBoard resists termites and humidity while remaining carbon-negative, ensuring both beauty and sustainability in cladding projects.

Yes. Properly installed wall cladding reduces thermal bridging and enhances insulation, lowering heating and cooling costs. In the GCC, where cooling demand is high, this is especially valuable. DesertBoard PSB® contributes by providing stable, dense boards that support insulation layers and maintain performance in high-heat environments. Its eco-friendly profile also lowers embodied carbon, making it a smart choice for projects that want both energy efficiency and sustainability in their wall cladding systems.

Natural stone and premium metals are usually the most expensive, while timber and MDF are cheaper but less durable. DesertBoard PSB® offers a mid-range cost with superior lifecycle value. Its durability and termite resistance reduce replacement and maintenance expenses, and its local production in Abu Dhabi lowers transport costs compared to imports. Combined with its sustainability credentials, DesertBoard delivers better long-term value than conventional cladding materials.

Yes. DesertBoard PSB® is highly versatile and integrates seamlessly with other materials in hybrid designs. Its machinability allows for precise detailing, while its eco-friendly profile strengthens a project’s sustainability narrative. By choosing DesertBoard alongside other materials, developers achieve both aesthetic variety and environmental responsibility, ensuring modern and future-ready interior designs.

DesertBoard’s Palm Strand Board (PSB®) is made in the UAE from upcycled date palm fronds, turning agricultural byproducts into a carbon-negative construction material. Unlike MDF or plywood, it is zero-formaldehyde, healthier for interiors, and avoids deforestation. For wall cladding, this means a safe, sustainable, and high-performance material that aligns with modern building codes and sustainability certifications such as LEED, WELL, and Estidama. Its fire resistance up to 120 minutes, termite protection, make PSB® a reliable alternative to conventional cladding boards in the GCC market.

Yes. DesertBoard PSB® is certified super E0 as per Al Sa’afat certificate of product conformity ensuring zero-formaldehyde emissions and healthier indoor environments. This makes it especially suitable for sensitive spaces like schools, hospitals, and residential interiors. Unlike MDF or chipboard, DesertBoard avoids harmful VOC emissions while maintaining high strength and fire resistance. For developers prioritizing safety and health, PSB® is a globally tested & regionally manufactured solution that combines occupant well-being with environmental responsibility in wall cladding applications.

Wall cladding materials in the GCC must withstand high heat, humidity, and termites. DesertBoard PSB® is designed for these conditions, with built-in termite resistance and excellent dimensional stability. When properly coated, it resists moisture and UV exposure, making it more reliable than MDF or untreated plywood. Its structural strength ensures durability even in high-use areas. By choosing DesertBoard, architects and contractors secure a wall cladding solution that performs consistently in the region’s demanding climate while also being sustainable.

MDF and plywood often release formaldehyde and may degrade in humid environments, while gypsum boards are prone to breakage and lack long-term strength. DesertBoard PSB® offers stronger screw-holding, and zero formaldehyde, improving both performance and health outcomes. Compared to imported alternatives, DesertBoard also reduces transport emissions and delivers faster lead times. Its sustainability profile makes it superior to conventional wall cladding boards, while its durability ensures a longer lifecycle and fewer replacements.

DesertBoard PSB® is certified by the UAE Al Sa’afat (Dubai Municipality) Formaldehyde Content Certificate (E0) for zero formaldehyde emissions, ensuring healthier indoor air quality. In addition, Wimpey Laboratories testing confirms its exceptional structural properties: Density: Average of 835 kg/m³, Bending Strength: Average of 19.8 N/mm², Modulus of Elasticity: Average of 3626 N/mm², Internal Bond Strength: Average of 0.95 N/mm², Moisture Content: Average of 5.42%, Screw Withdrawal (Face): Average of 1295 N, Screw Withdrawal (Edge): Average of 941 N. These certifications prove DesertBoard is not only sustainable but also reliable, giving architects and contractors confidence in specifying PSB® for interior wall cladding projects.

Yes. DesertBoard PSB® can be finished with laminates, veneers, PU coatings, or paint, giving architects wide design flexibility.
